This was a guest-post I did for Colombia Politics on the 11th anniversary of the massacre of Bojayá. The first in a three part series. The majority of my research for it came from the amazing work on Historical Memory dune by the Grupo de Memoria Histórica and their report, "La Massacre de Bojayá: La Guerra Sin Límites"/"The Massacre of Bojayá: The War Without Limits".

A brief review of a beautiful vintage book: Paeces por paeces.

The book is an unique compilation of portraits of Nasa people (Paeces as were called by the Spanish Conquerors) taken by the Nasa people itself. It’s not some anthropological compilation of characters; it is almost a familiar album of the people registering friends, relatives and day to day life.

In the book: The photographic act, Phillippe Dubois writes:
"La compulsión a la repetición es algo esencial al acto fotográfico; no se toma una foto, sino por frustración; se toma siempre una serie —ametrallamos primero, seleccionamos después—; sólo produce satisfacción fotografiar a ese precio; repetir no tal o cual sujeto, sino repetir la toma de ese sujeto, repetir el acto mismo, recomenzar siempre, recomenzar eso, como en la pasión del juego o en el acto sexual: no poder dejar de dar ese golpe.
